SRU Archives & Special Collections

Carpooling is encouraged but must be self-selected and organized by the participants or facilitators, independently of the ILR. The individual is responsible for their choice of drivers and excludes the ILR association from the arrangement of carpool by participants/facilitators and resulting liability

The Slippery Rock University Archives and Special Collections collects and makes available material of enduring research value created by the University community over the course of our history. These include organizational records, photographs, memorabilia, oral histories, film and audio records of campus activities, people and events. Bailey Library's Special Collections collects, preserves, and makes available library material requiring special handling. Rarity, age, historical value, monetary value, condition, unusual format and local significance are some of the factors considered in the evaluation of materials for this collection. This tour will showcase the vast resources and artifacts available in the Archives and Special Collections as well as give an insight into archiving techniques and preservation methods.

The meal will be catered by the Camelot Restaurant. The venue is the same as last year, the Slippery Rock Park Commission Building, climate controlled. It is located at 320 North Main St., Slippery Rock, PA 16057.

Camp Sumter adjacent to Andersonville, Georgia was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the final fourteen months of the American Civil War. The prison was overcrowded to four times its capacity. The harsh conditions that the Union soldiers endured will be discussed in detail. The chief causes of death included scurvy, diarrhea, and dysentery. The Great, Great Grandfather of James Carnes had been held prisoner there for less than a year when he died from neglect.
